Pakistan Ranks 5th in Asia in Mobile Phone Users

With 93 million cellular subscribers (by May 2009), Pakistan stands fifth position for number of mobile users in Asia.

China easily ranks first with 644.8 million subscribers, while India scores second position by having 391.6 million mobile phone users. These two countries share 25 percent of total mobile phone users in the world, that is 1.04 billion subscribers of the world’s total number of 4.15 billion.

The third largest mobile market in Asia is Indonesia, with around 144.6 million, followed by Japan.

In fifth position is Pakistan, followed by Vietnam with around 73.2 million users.

The seventh is the Philippines with 71.7 million, followed by Thailand 62.7 million, Bangladesh 46.3 million and South Korea 46.2 million.

The top ten countries for mobile users in Asia have 3.48 billion people and 1.68 billion mobile users.

Number of mobile users in Pakistan reaches 90 million

KARACHI: The number of the users of mobile phone in Pakistan has reached from 0.3 million to about 90 million during the last eight years.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the ratio of mobile phone users all over the country has been increased from 0.22 per cent in 2000 to 54.70 per cent in June 2008.

As per PTA, there are 88.1 million mobile phone users out of the country’s population of 165 million while they were 306,000 in 2000.

State of Telecom Industry in Pakistan that in 2007 the total number of mobile subscribers in Pakistan reached 76.6 million. He is reporting from an interesting statistical compilation of achievements compiled by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA); (more number from this report are included below).

I ask the questions I do in the headline not out of cynicism but out of very honest inquisitiveness. I deal a lot with development related statistics in my professional work and for many reasons the number seems rather surprising to me. It probably is that the meaning of “subscriber” here is different from what I would have expected or that I am unfamiliar with the specifics of how this number is calculated and what it signifies. If so, I am eager to learn. I also wonder to what extent massive growth in mobile phone subscribers is necessarily good for a developing country like Pakistan?

The average cell phone is used for about a year
The average cell phone price has been about $100 over the last 8 years (on the lower side probably)
The CAGR has been around 226% to get us from 300K to 90M users
Then you are led to conclusion that Pakistanis have spent almost $16BN on cell phones in the last 8 years. That’s over $2BN a year just on the cell phones themselves, representing about 10% of the trade deficit in the current year, but a much bigger percentage of the trade deficit during this entire 8 year period! Some of you will want to argue with me about non-linear growth blah blah blah. I understand all that. This is a simplified estimate and if you reduce the number of phones, I can argue for an increase in the average price. Point is, the final number is in this ballpark.
What is inexcusable, looking at this, is the fact that there is NO cell phone manufacturing happening in Pakistan! Clearly, $16BN in revenue is enough enticement for ANY cell phone manufacturer to setup shop locally. It’s incentive enough for some level of vertical integration where much of the supply chain could justifiably reside in Pakistan. None of this has been done, and in a nutshell, it’s bloody shameful. It has had very negative economic impacts that could have simply been avoided. I wonder if anyone at the PTA or Ministry of Communications is reading this and whether they will move off their behinds and fix it.

Pakistan goes from 300,000 to 90 million cell phone users in under 8 years

Estimate of how much Pakistanis have spent on cell phones between 2001-08
Talk about the acceleration of a Bugatti Veyron being impressive. It just got left in the dust with the rate of growth the Pakistani cell phone market has demonstrated. The News reports that the cell phone user base in the country just hit 90 million!
But here’s the scary part. If you make the following assumptions:
The average cell phone is used for about a year
The average cell phone price has been about $100 over the last 8 years (on the lower side probably)
The CAGR has been around 226% to get us from 300K to 90M users

China Mobile to Buy $5.8 Billion Stake in Pudong Bank

By Mark Lee
March 10 (Bloomberg) -- China Mobile Ltd., the world’s biggest phone company by market value, agreed to buy 20 percent of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank Co. for 39.8 billion yuan ($5.8 billion) to expand its electronic-payment business.
The carrier’s Guangdong Mobile unit plans to buy 2.21 billion new China-listed shares for 18.03 yuan apiece, according to a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange today. That’s 13 percent lower than the bank’s last-traded price.
China Mobile and Pudong Bank will form a strategic alliance to offer wireless finance services including mobile bank cards and payment services, the statement said. The phone company’s shares have underperformed the benchmark Hang Seng Index since Feb. 26, when trading in the lender was halted, on concern the operator is deviating from its main business.
“This is not something we’d prefer,” said Pauline Dan, chief investment officer at Samsung Investment Trust, which oversees $80 billion in assets, including China Mobile shares. “From a return perspective, it’s much better for the company to return the cash to shareholders.”
The Beijing-based carrier rose 0.1 percent HK$74.15 in Hong Kong trading today before the announcement. The stock has lost 3.2 percent since Feb. 26 when Pudong Bank shares were suspended at 20.74 yuan pending the announcement.
For Pudong Bank, the deal will help it replenish capital after Chinese banks extended a record 9.59 trillion yuan of credit last year.
Wireless Banking
China Mobile is valued at $193 billion as of today, compared with $151 billion for AT&T Inc., the world’s second- largest phone company. China Telecom Corp., the next-biggest Chinese carrier is valued at $36.6 billion. Pudong Bank is worth $26.8 billion.
Pudong Bank “is just the right size,” China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou told reporters in Hong Kong in a video conference. “If a bank is very big, an investment will give us only a very small stake; if the bank is too small, it may not have the necessary scale,” he said.
The purchase will make China Mobile the second-biggest shareholder in the bank after Shanghai International Group, according to the statement.
The investment presents China Mobile a platform to offer wireless-banking services to more than 527 million customers in the world’s fastest-growing major economy. The Hong Kong-listed company had 256 billion yuan of cash at the end of June, according to its interim report in August.
Shares in the carrier fell to a two-month low on March 4, a day after the company confirmed it had begun talks to buy the Shanghai Pudong stake.
‘Totally Unrelated’
“The part of the business they are targeting is very nascent, so it may have an advantage in it, but it’s not clear how big the market will be,” said Daniel Baker, who rates China Mobile shares “hold” at Mirae Asset Securities in Hong Kong. The deal is expected to “slightly” increase China Mobile’s earnings per share because “they are paying this with cash that would otherwise be sitting in their bank account.”
The phone carrier is “going into something that is totally unrelated to what they are doing right now,” said Samsung Investment’s Dan.
The Pudong Bank investment should be regarded as an extension of China Mobile’s main telecommunications business, Wang said. The carrier won’t consider investments in other industries such as energy and property, he said.
“China Mobile is very much focused on telecommunications operations,” Wang said.
China Mobile started allowing some users to pay bills with their handsets last year, and began providing other new services such as mobile television and electronic readers, Wang said in November. The company is expanding its range of value-added services as competition intensifies with rivals China Telecom Corp. and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd.
Stake Purchases
China Mobile joins South Korea’s SK Telecom Co. and the Philippines’ Globe Telecom Inc. in investing in financial firms.
SK Telecom last year agreed to buy a stake in Hana Financial Group Inc.’s credit-card unit for 400 billion won ($354 million), while Globe Telecom Inc. agreed to buy 40 percent of BPI-Globe BanKO Savings Bank in 2008. Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest maker of mobile phones, last year bought a minority stake in Obopay, a supplier of mobile banking services in the U.S. and India.
Pudong Bank, with 491 outlets nationwide, is seeking to boost financial strength after expanding loans by 30 percent in the first nine months last year to support China’s 4 trillion yuan economic stimulus package. Pudong Bank in September raised 15 billion yuan in a private placement to ensure it has enough capital to meet loan demand and regulatory requirements.
‘Special Vehicle’
China Mobile has set up a “special vehicle” to carry out its proposed investment in Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Wang said. The Chinese company, which agreed last year to pay as much as NT$17.8 billion ($561 million) to buy a 12 percent stake in the Taipei-based carrier, still awaits regulatory clearance from Taiwanese authorities to complete the purchase, he said.
China Mobile Communications, which owns 74 percent of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile, bought a 19.9 percent stake in Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings Ltd. in 2006. A year later, the phone company acquired Paktel Ltd., a wireless carrier in Pakistan, for its first purchase outside Chinese territories.

Internships In Telecom Industry Of Pakistan
By Babar Bhatti on October 9, 2007 under Careers, Companies, ICT, Mobile Companies | 2,965 views

Good career opportunites in general are scarce in Pakistan. Internship opportunities in particular are quite limited. Internship programs take some effort to set up and not all companies support the internship programs. In my opinion good interns bring fresh ideas, perspective and energy and create goodwill and are well worth the effort. I asked a telecom student at SZABIST about his views on internship. His response:

It is very difficult to get opportunities in top notch mobile companies in Pakistan. Companies like Mobilink, Telenor, Ufone and Warid visit quite regularly or at least once a year in top notch institutions of Engineering and Business Administration like IBA, NED, UET (Lahore), LUMS and CBM and take evaluations tests. Later the short listed candidates are interviewed and the few lucky ones get through. Not to mention, there are always few candidates who use back door entry through good PR and other links with some1 in the management of that company to get in but by and large merit prevails in most of these companies. Its true that there are many talented individuals in Pakistan but not many opportunities exist for them so many go abroad.

On the TGP forum, another recent graduate of FAST-NU shared his internship experience:

I was lucky to secure an internship in the O&M dept of Telenor Pakistan comprising of six weeks last year, but a heavy majority of our first batch passed out without any “proper” internship where they could groom themselves professionally. There is another problem, that is of relative closeness of the Telecom sector. There maybe a lot of vertical growth in various organizations but there is less horizontal growth. We need right direction from the industry. More structured recruitment and internship programs shall be a great step in that direction.

Ufone and Telenor have ‘formal’ internship programs advertised on their site. Other job sites such as Mobilink, www.rozee.pk and www.finaljob.com.pk are also good places to search for internships and jobs. What about multinational companies such as Huawei and ZTE? These companies are popular with job seekers so it would be nice if someone can share information about internships or jobs there.

The excerpt from Ufone’s site below talks about a well-structured internship and leaves a good impression. The real question, as mentioned above, is how do we extend these opportunities to more talented students?

Ufone offers paid 6-8 weeks internship programs to fresh graduates, college students from various disciplines in all the major departments. This program is designed in such a way that it ensures maximum learning in your chosen career area and provides you an insight into our company, work and people. You will receive valuable on-the-job training, opportunities to learn, coupled with challenging projects and assignments.

The internship at Ufone is objective/assignment based. These are reviewed and evaluated at the end of internship. In addition, interns are paired with a mentor for further guidance. A project summary is required to be submitted to the supervisor and HR at the end of your internship.

Samsung Omnia HD I8910 in Pakistan
by Mansoor Ehsan on October 31, 2009
Samsung has been marketing their two new mobiles recently in Pakistan with one of them being Samsung Omnia HD (i8910). This phone seems very exciting as I browse through various reviews over internet and see the description and specifications. Gosh! they have put in everything in this phone; I wonder is there anything left which new phones will bring in?!
To start with, the name says it all… OMNIA+HD… everybody knows Omnia is their wonderful touch series and then this HD. HD video recording and playback is definitely top-notch stuff but these are just the fancy extras on a full scale featured phone. There’s also a huge AMOLED screen (heyy not that huge as if you take it like TV!!), 600 MHz powerful processor and DEDICATED GRAPHICS CHIP!!. If this was not enough there is an 8 MP camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, generous 8/16 GB internal storage and DivX/XviD HD playback with subtitle support. Finally, the whole thing runs the latest Symbian S60 5th edition skinned with the new TouchWiz 3D interface.
I can see i mentioned AMOLED screen and here is what Wikipedia says about it [
Wikipedia entry for AMOLED].If you want more detailed specifications you can see them here at GSMarena.
Availability and Price:
Samsung Omnia HD is available at Mobilezone outlets in Pakistan. The price is PKR 54,900. Ahhh its very high! I wonder who would prefer it over iPhones that are also available in this range.

MCB Mobile Banking - A good tech move
by Mansoor Ehsan on July 12, 2009
MCB has launched mobile banking (last week) enabling its customers to take advantage of conveniance it offers. We all know what mobile apps are capable of doing: more productivity, conveniance and easier access but what about security? They claim its secure but let the mobile banking hacker army spring up and then we will comment if it is real tough to crack or a piece of cake. Mobile banking is not new to the world but for Pakistan it certainly is and so are the security concerns.
With MCB Mobile Banking you can check your account balance, view your mini-statement, recharge prepaid mobile connections, pay postpaid mobile bills, pay utility bills, transfer funds instantly (to any MCB account), pay MCB credit card bills, and make donations to specially setup accounts like PM’s donation fund for IDPs etc.
Their website offers testdrive their mobile banking for better experiance. So here are the screenshots:

Daily Pic Post: State of Telecom Industry in Pakistan
by Mansoor Ehsan on July 2, 2009
I could not trace credit for this photo as it was saved in my hard disk from quite a time now
Pakistan’s Telecom industry has seen a boom in last decade with almost more than 90 million subscribers countrywide. I am unsure about where it stands on the ranks of world but i can see everybody using mobile here in Pakistan as seen in the picture is a dervesh talking on the mobile phone. We must also give credit to OEMs who have made the mobile set itself affordable for poor people. It would be interesting to note which OEM is popular amongst the poor people along with operator. Any researcher there?
We have started Daily Pic Post as a new initiative where by we will be sharing interesting, crazy, motivational, emotional (and put all sorts of adjectives here) pictures from the Pakistani Society. So if you have got something to share with us please send at mansoor (dot) ehsan (at) gmail. The published picture will be shared with all sorts of credits and yeah you can send a brief description too! So friends, I look forward to all sorts of images (porn is not accepted :p )

Cellcos Feeling the heat as iPhone Skype got 1 million downloads
by MJK on April 7, 2009
As earlier reported by
TechNama about the launch of iPhone Skype application, it has got 1 million downloads in just two days of its launch. This is a new record for any such application. The news has already set alarm bells in the cellcos who are taking this news as a direct attack on their core voice business. Since the iPhone Skype application uses Wifi networks, the possibility of WiMAX contributing to this unique mix is not a distant possibility. According to Telecom Online Magazine,“This wave of user enthusiasm is likely to have more impact in changing operators’ minds than any advocacy groups, but the Free Press is trying to get legal clarity in the US too. It called on the FCC to require wireless carriers to allow consumers access to Skype via smartphones, as well as the ability to connect their devices to the internet through tethering applications on their cellphones.
