Samsung Omnia HD I8910 in Pakistan
by Mansoor Ehsan on October 31, 2009
Samsung has been marketing their two new mobiles recently in Pakistan with one of them being Samsung Omnia HD (i8910). This phone seems very exciting as I browse through various reviews over internet and see the description and specifications. Gosh! they have put in everything in this phone; I wonder is there anything left which new phones will bring in?!
To start with, the name says it all… OMNIA+HD… everybody knows Omnia is their wonderful touch series and then this HD. HD video recording and playback is definitely top-notch stuff but these are just the fancy extras on a full scale featured phone. There’s also a huge AMOLED screen (heyy not that huge as if you take it like TV!!), 600 MHz powerful processor and DEDICATED GRAPHICS CHIP!!. If this was not enough there is an 8 MP camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, generous 8/16 GB internal storage and DivX/XviD HD playback with subtitle support. Finally, the whole thing runs the latest Symbian S60 5th edition skinned with the new TouchWiz 3D interface.
I can see i mentioned AMOLED screen and here is what Wikipedia says about it [
Wikipedia entry for AMOLED].If you want more detailed specifications you can see them here at GSMarena.
Availability and Price:
Samsung Omnia HD is available at Mobilezone outlets in Pakistan. The price is PKR 54,900. Ahhh its very high! I wonder who would prefer it over iPhones that are also available in this range.

MCB Mobile Banking - A good tech move
by Mansoor Ehsan on July 12, 2009
MCB has launched mobile banking (last week) enabling its customers to take advantage of conveniance it offers. We all know what mobile apps are capable of doing: more productivity, conveniance and easier access but what about security? They claim its secure but let the mobile banking hacker army spring up and then we will comment if it is real tough to crack or a piece of cake. Mobile banking is not new to the world but for Pakistan it certainly is and so are the security concerns.
With MCB Mobile Banking you can check your account balance, view your mini-statement, recharge prepaid mobile connections, pay postpaid mobile bills, pay utility bills, transfer funds instantly (to any MCB account), pay MCB credit card bills, and make donations to specially setup accounts like PM’s donation fund for IDPs etc.
Their website offers testdrive their mobile banking for better experiance. So here are the screenshots:

by Mansoor Ehsan on July 2, 2009
I could not trace credit for this photo as it was saved in my hard disk from quite a time now

I am unsure about where it stands on the ranks of world but i can see everybody using mobile here in Pakistan as seen in the picture is a dervesh talking on the mobile phone. We must also give credit to OEMs who have made the mobile set itself affordable for poor people. It would be interesting to note which OEM is popular amongst the poor people along with operator. Any researcher there?
We have started Daily Pic Post as a new initiative where by we will be sharing interesting, crazy, motivational, emotional (and put all sorts of adjectives here) pictures from the Pakistani Society. So if you have got something to share with us please send at mansoor (dot) ehsan (at) gmail. Cellcos Feeling the heat as iPhone Skype got 1 million downloads
by MJK on April 7, 2009
As earlier reported by
TechNama about the launch of iPhone Skype application, it has got 1 million downloads in just two days of its launch. This is a new record for any such application. The news has already set alarm bells in the cellcos who are taking this news as a direct attack on their core voice business. Since the iPhone Skype application uses Wifi networks, the possibility of WiMAX contributing to this unique mix is not a distant possibility. According to Telecom Online Magazine,“This wave of user enthusiasm is likely to have more impact in changing operators’ minds than any advocacy groups, but the Free Press is trying to get legal clarity in the US too. It called on the FCC to require wireless carriers to allow consumers access to Skype via smartphones, as well as the ability to connect their devices to the internet through tethering applications on their cellphones.
